Staying in the Inbox: The Newsletter Module

Staying in the Inbox: The Newsletter Module

A website gets visited. A newsletter gets read while the coffee is still steaming.

A visitor who's been to your website once has to actively come back to hear from you again. A subscriber, on the other hand, gets your news delivered straight to their inbox—without ever having to remember to check back. That's exactly the difference the Newsletter Module puts to work for you: managing subscribers cleanly, building campaigns, and handling the actual delivery reliably through the Mail Module.

Subscribers, Managed Cleanly and Legally Sound

Every new subscriber goes through a double opt-in process: a signup only really counts once it's been explicitly confirmed via a confirmation email. That's not just good for compliance—it also makes sure that only people who genuinely want to read your content actually end up on the list. No typo addresses, no accidental signups.

In the backend, you can see at a glance how many subscribers are confirmed, how many are still waiting on their confirmation, and how many have unsubscribed. The search lets you find individual subscribers instantly by email or name, and each entry shows their preferred language—handy for later targeting campaigns specifically in German or English.

Email addresses and names are stored encrypted, not as plain text. They're only decrypted and made readable again when you actually open the backend. That means they're protected on disk itself—an extra layer of security in case someone ever gained unauthorized access to the raw data files.

The confirmation and unsubscribe links themselves also work through SHA-256-secured tokens instead of guessable, sequential numbers. That means no one can confirm someone else's signup or remove someone else's address from the list just by trying random values—a small but important detail, so neither you nor your subscribers ever have to worry about it.

Campaigns That Get to Mature in Peace

A new campaign doesn't have to go out right away. You create it as a draft, work on it at your own pace, come back later, tweak a little more—and only send it once you're genuinely happy with it. The overview always shows you the status of every campaign: still a draft, or already sent, complete with the exact recipient count.

Once Sent, Still Readable

One particularly nice touch: sent campaigns can also be published as their own standalone HTML page. Anyone who missed an issue, or wants to read it again later, simply finds it in the archive—your newsletter doesn't just vanish into the digital void after sending, it stays around as a small archive right on your own website.

Delivery Runs Through the Mail Module

The Newsletter Module takes care of subscribers and campaign content—the actual, reliable delivery is handled behind the scenes by the Mail Module. It's the same clean division of labor found across PlaCeMS: every module does what it's good at, and relies on the right module for everything else. That means the Newsletter Module requires an installed and properly configured Mail Module—without it, neither the signup confirmation email nor the actual campaign delivery would work.

Only If You Need It

Like every PlaCeMS module, the Newsletter Module is completely optional. If you're not planning a newsletter, it simply stays unused—no one signs up for something that doesn't exist.

A click to your website isn't always enough. A newsletter makes sure your news actually reaches the place where it truly gets read—the inbox.
